Opal is the birthstone for October and the gemstone of the 14th?anniversary. In the Middle Ages, Opal was considered a stone that could?provide?great fortune as it was believed to?possess?all the virtues of each gemstone which?colour?was represented in the?colour?spectrum of Opal. However, in later years, Opal?acquired?a less?auspicious?reputation, following the publication of Sir Walter Scott?s novel, ?Anne of Geierskin? in 1829. In the novel, The Baroness of Arnheim wears an Opal talisman with supernatural powers which turns?colourless?when holy water falls on it and the evil Baroness dies. Due to popularity of the novel people began to associate Opals with bad luck and death. For the next 20 years, the sale of opals remained low. It was only when the queen of England has decided to gift each of her daughters an Opal in their wedding day, that the value of Opal rightfully increased.?
