In the novel, The Baroness of Arnheim wears an Opal talisman with supernatural powers which turns?colourless?when holy water falls on it and the evil Baroness dies. Due to popularity of the novel people began to associate Opals with bad luck and death. For the next 20 years, the sale of opals remained low. It was only when the queen of England has decided to gift each of her daughters an Opal in their wedding day, that the value of Opal rightfully increased.?
